A 5-year-old Tampa girl with autism who had wandered into the woods was safely located and rescued by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on Monday, officials said. The child was discovered after a search led by the Sheriff's Office's aviation unit deployed a thermal imaging camera to track her movements through the thick foliage.
Reported missing around 5:10 p.m. by her frantic family, the deputies responded and, according to WPBF, the aviation unit equipped with high-tech thermal optics quickly zeroed in on the girl. Disappearing after she left her home, the child was found in less than an hour, before darkness could cast a shadow over the Florida woods.
Following their swift action that led to the child being found without injury, Sheriff Chad Chronister praised his team for their outstanding work. "Their quick action saved the day, turning potential tragedy into a hopeful reunion," Chronister told NBC6 Miami. He added, "Their dedication shows what service and protection are all about here at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office."
With the successful outcome, the local community has expressed relief and gratitude towards the deputies for their diligent efforts in ensuring the safety of the young girl, reunited at last with her family.
