
Two students at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, located in the suburb of Wheaton, Ill., are facing felony charges following a physical confrontation on campus last month, law enforcement officials reported. The boys, who have been charged with aggravated battery on public property; a Class 3 Felony, were allegedly involved in a scuffle that caught the attention of a school resource officer due to a medical emergency, as reported by CBS Chicago.
At approximately 11:43 a.m. on Feb. 28, the officer discovered that one of the male students in the common areas needed immediate medical aid which was thought to be related to the altercation. The student was then taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and, treatment, according to CBS Chicago. The second student involved was pinpointed roughly an hour later; another student had recorded part of the fight on their cellphone and provided the footage to the authorities and school management.
The Wheaton Police Department has been thoroughly investigating the incident, in coordination with the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The state’s attorney's office has been reviewing the incident in search of potential criminal charges following the schoolyard brawl. The information, as covered by WGN-TV, indicates that the two students involved have not been back to school since the altercation.
Both juveniles are due to appear in juvenile court on Thursday as part of the legal proceedings stemming from the incident. The specifics of the altercation, and the condition of the hospitalized student, have not been disclosed. This case has brought attention to the ongoing issue of student safety within educational institutions and the role of law enforcement on school grounds.
