With spring break just around the corner, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is ramping up efforts to keep the roads free from tragedy. In a recent campaign called Drive Sober. No Regrets., TxDOT has partnered with college students across Texas to curb drunk driving incidents during this high-risk period. The campaign is making rounds in college campuses and popular spring break destinations throughout the state, delivering a message that emphasizes the importance of celebrating safely. According to a statement obtained by TxDOT, their collective goal is clear: have fun without the fatal consequences.

"Every death due to drunk driving is preventable," Marc Williams, TxDOT Executive Director said. He urged that there are plenty of safe alternatives to getting behind the wheel after drinking, suggesting options like taking a cab, using a rideshare service, or simply deciding to not drive. "By finding a sober ride, taking a cab, using a rideshare, or simply staying put after drinking, students can make sure their families gather for graduation and not a funeral," Williams stressed, according to the TxDOT report.

During 2022's spring break, Texan roads saw 810 DUI-alcohol-related traffic crashes, culminating in 44 fatalities and causing serious injury to 90 others. These sobering numbers serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that drunk driving can exert on communities and families. The “DUI Not So Fun House” – a mobile educational exhibit powered by TxDOT – seeks to drive this message home by providing a simulated experience of the perils of driving under the influence.

TxDOT's Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign, an integral part of the #EndTheStreakTX movement, is making determined efforts to put an end to a grim, ongoing trend. Not since November 7, 2000, has Texas experienced a day without a fatal crash on its roads. For further information or inquiries, TxDOT urges members of the media to get in touch with their Media Relations at [email protected] or by phone at (512) 463-8700. Details about the tragic prevalence of drunk driving are available from the Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report (CR-3), which TxDOT received and processed as of November 16, 2023.
