Early Wednesday morning, El Cajon Police were called to the scene of a hit-and-run accident where a vehicle plowed into a power pole on the 1200 Block of E. Washington Avenue, leaving a scene of significant damage and dangerous powerlines dangling precariously above the street, as reported on the city's official website. The crash created a hazardous situation for residents and commuters alike, with SDG&E quickly stepping in to rectify the downed lines and restore electricity to the neighborhoods impacted by the sudden outage.
The morning disruption took a toll on the flow of traffic, snarling the commute of countless individuals who traverse the artery of E. Washington Ave, which was subsequently closed due to the emergency. A diligent effort by ECPD Traffic Division investigators, utilizing the License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras, led to the identification of the vehicle involved in the accident. The car was found on the 1000 block of South Anza and had sustained serious damage, police later reported.
Officers located the car's owner and, after being questioned, admitted to his involvement in the accident, also affirming that he sustained no injuries during the incident; the suspect was then arrested for hit-and-run, and his vehicle was impounded. The cause of the collision, which is still under investigation, has yet to be disclosed by authorities.
