Illinois' unsung heroes of the headset are being spotlighted this week, as the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and Illinois State Police (ISP) unite to salute the state's telecommunicators, Governor JB Pritzker even dedicating April 14-20 as Telecommunications Week to highlight their critical role in public safety and response. Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera praised these individuals for being "the first to answer the call," noting their vital role in coordinating the response to emergency situations, information they provide to responders is critical helping responders understand and prepare to assist upon arrival, they're the voice of comfort and reassurance in times of distress.
In the wind-swept streets and throughout the vibrant neighborhoods of Illinois, the calm and collected professionals on the other end of a 911 call tend to blur into the tapestry of essential services, ISP's Telecommunication Services Bureau (TSB) houses approximately 100 public safety telecommunicators who collectively managed over 530,000 calls for service just last year, with strategic placement of six communications centers enabling them to deliver immediate support for state, federal, county, and municipal agencies.
Director of ISP Brendan F. Kelly lauded the telecommunicators as saviors within seconds, the voices that don’t shake when the ground beneath them might, "This April, we honor those calming voices who answer the call, and recognize the vital role they play in ensuring efficient and effective emergency response in times of crisis," he said, capturing the gravity of their behind-the-scenes endeavors that span a labyrinth of coordination amid chaos.
It's an annual tip of the cap, starting way back in 1981 courtesy of Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office in California, when the second week of April was first carved out to express gratitude toward these unceasingly vigilant telecommunicators, who are often the lifeline for those stricken by fear, shedding light on the resilience of their commitment, this year once again we come together to clap for the voices that don’t echo but resonate in the silent aftermath of emergencies.
