Tragic discovery shook West Palm Beach on Tuesday as workers found human remains believed to be of an infant at a local solid waste facility. The grim find was made at the Solid Waste Authority Renewable Energy Facility located on 6501 North Jog Road, as confirmed by the West Palm Beach Police Department.
Mike Jachles, the police spokesman, detailed that the remains were identified on the tipping floor, where waste from the garbage trucks is unloaded. According to a WPTV report, Jachles stated, "Detectives believe these were human remains of an infant." The discovery was made just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, launching an investigation that had detectives diligently sifting through garbage in search of further evidence.
Authorities worked through the night, with Jachles observing, "pouring through mounds of garbage with rakes, with tools and by hand, looking for additional remains." However, as of midnight, no more remains were retrieved beyond what the worker originally located. Efforts continue as detectives aim to figure out the identity of the infant and the circumstances surrounding this unsettling incident.
In a statement that was unfortunately sullied by suspect tracking of her location, a spokeswoman for the SWA declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. The medical examiner's office is now tasked with determining the infant's cause of death, a necessary piece in solving this heartrending puzzle.
