Chaos erupted at a rental car facility near San Diego's airport when a man commandeered a vehicle and proceeded to wreak havoc in what appeared to be an impromptu demolition derby. According to a San Diego Police Department Facebook post, the incident took place after the suspect gained unauthorized access to the car, and instead of complying with law enforcement, he locked himself inside the vehicle, blasting music to the dismay of officers on site.
In a scene more typical for an action movie, the unnamed man ignored officers' instructions, and the tense situation escalated, requiring tactical units to be called in. He managed to cause more than $300,000 in damages before law enforcement could safely intervene. The San Diego Police emphasized the importance of patience, communication, and teamwork in mitigating the ordeal, noting that despite the extensive damage, there were, thankfully, no physical injuries reported.
The encounter ended through coordinated efforts involving strategic tactics and non-lethal tools deployed by the police to subdue the defiant individual. "The standoff concluded with the combined efforts of our team, leveraging tactical units and non-lethal measures to ensure a safe resolution," the San Diego Police Department recounted, highlighting their commitment to resolving the situation without resorting to force that might jeopardize human life.
He was eventually taken into custody and is expected to face numerous charges related to the incident.
