Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will make the proclamation, recognizing the Nicaraguan community's fight for democracy and human rights, as reported by the official Miami-Dade government website. The day is set to remember those who have laid down their lives and freedoms in the name of a better Nicaragua.
In a powerful move to publicly stand beside the Nicaraguan-Americans, Mayor Levine Cava stated, "Recognizing this day as Nicaraguan Freedom Day reaffirms Miami-Dade County's commitment to upholding the universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights." The Mayor emphasized that Miami-Dade intends to fully support the durable values that bind the community together.
According to the official press release, the event on April 18 will witness Mayor Levine Cava, Chairman Oliver Gilbert III, and other key figures such as Jonathan Duarte and Felix Maradiaga from the Fundacion Para La Libertad De Nicaragua, as well as Councilwoman Maureen Porras, coming together in solidarity. The declaration ceremony will take place at the Stephen P. Clark Center on the morning of Nicaraguan Freedom Day.
