Giving a second life to Christmas trees, the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is turning holiday remnants into garden-friendly mulch—and it's free for local residents. After DSWM's call to recycle your festive fir through their “Go Green, and Recycle Your Evergreen” program, those disposed evergreens are now ready for your backyard.

Starting April 15, ready with a shovel and some elbow grease, the mulch will be up for grabs on a first-come, first-served basis as reported by Miami-Dade County's announcement. Just remember to bring your containers to haul the goods—commercial mulch pickup is not on the table.

But don't wait too long; this giveaway is while supplies last. Nine Trash and Recycling Centers (TRCs) across Miami-Dade are participating, opening their doors seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For your mulching needs, join the line at TRCs like Eureka Drive, Moody Drive, and Sunset Kendall among others.

Encouraging a green holiday spirit, DSWM's initiative not only supports recycling but also offers a sustainable option for embellishing local landscapes. So before heading out to one of the nine locations, including West Little River or South Miami Heights, ensure to pick your tools, as no assistance will be provided on-site for the mulch loading.
