Pedestrian Fatally Struck on US-101 Near San Francisco, Not a DUI Case, Say CHP OfficialsSource: CHP - San Francisco

Traffic came to a standstill on US-101 after a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle late Monday night. The CHP San Francisco Area office reported the incident occurred just south of the San Bruno Avenue overcrossing. The driver of a white Hyundai Sonata was southbound when they hit the pedestrian, who was attempting to cross the lanes, according to a statement released on their official Facebook page.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near the San Francisco International Airport at approximately 10:12 pm. The man, who was quickly determined to have fatally succumbed to his injuries, has yet to be publicly identified. Officials are working not just only to identify the deceased but to untangle the reasons behind the tragic decision to cross the highway on foot. Despite the grim outcome, preliminary findings by the CHP suggest that DUI was not a contributing factor in the accident.

The driver involved in the tragic event stopped to report the incident and cooperated fully with law enforcement on the scene. Closure of the southbound lanes during the investigation led to significant traffic delays, with lane reopenings not occurring until the following day at 12:02 am.

As the investigation continues, the San Mateo County Coroner's Office is taking the lead on identifying the victim and notifying the next of kin.
