Gobo, Red, Mokey, Wembley and Boober Fraggle are trading their underground cave for San Francisco's Market Street this fall. Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock LIVE, an all-new musical stage adventure built around Jim Henson's beloved puppet universe, is set to play the Golden Gate Theatre on November 21, complete with a giant Gorg, puppet-sized Doozers and new creatures built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
The touring production, detailed in photos shared on Facebook by ATG San Francisco, is based on the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series and features walk-around versions of the Fraggles alongside fan-favorite songs and visual effects. According to the same post, the photos of the new puppets and creatures are credited to The Jim Henson Company. San Francisco's stop is one part of a much larger rollout: the show's second national tour launches September 18 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and sprawls across more than 40 North American cities, according to The Jim Henson Company. That tour follows a summer run at New York City's New Victory Theater.
A Broadway Veteran Leads the Puppet Quest
The stage adaptation is written, directed and choreographed by Tony-nominated Broadway artist John Tartaglia, known for his work on Avenue Q and Shrek the Musical, who also serves as creative supervisor for the Fraggle Rock franchise at The Jim Henson Company, per TheaterMania. Tartaglia has noted that despite the franchise existing for more than 40 years, this production marks its first official live stage tour, as reported by TheaterMania.
To keep the characters feeling authentic, the live show incorporates recorded vocal performances from veteran Muppeteers Dave Goelz and Karen Prell, layered onto physical puppets built by the Creature Shop. Prell performs Red Fraggle, while Goelz has voiced characters across the franchise since its 1980s origins, according to the same TheaterMania report. Onstage, the story follows Gobo, Red, Mokey, Wembley and Boober on a quest to find the lost Celebration Stone, an ancient artifact shattered generations ago that holds the power to unite everyone for the ultimate party.
Decades of Henson History, Now Onstage
The original Fraggle Rock television series, created by Jim Henson, premiered in 1983 and ran for four seasons, establishing core themes of interconnectedness, empathy and diversity across different puppet species, according to the New Victory Theater. The modern reboot, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, premiered on Apple TV+ in January 2022 and won Outstanding Children's or Family Viewing Series at the 3rd Annual Children's and Family Emmy Awards, per Apple TV Press, which also noted Apple TV+ renewed the series for a second season following its initial critical acclaim.
The stage musical runs approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes including one intermission, with select tour stops offering dedicated sensory-friendly performances equipped with sign-language interpretation and audio descriptions, the New Victory Theater notes. Fans hoping for extra face time with the characters can purchase an optional pre-show VIP package that includes a photo opportunity with the Fraggles 90 minutes before curtain, along with exclusive tour merchandise like posters and buttons, according to Des Moines Performing Arts.
Historic Golden Gate Theatre Sets the Scene
The show will land at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre at 1 Taylor Street, a venue that originally opened in 1922 as a vaudeville house and now operates under ATG Entertainment with a seating capacity of nearly 2,300 seats, according to ATG Entertainment. Designed by architect G. Albert Lansburgh, the historic Market Street venue underwent a major renovation in 2017 and 2018. The theater has stayed busy with touring programming this year, having recently hosted a slate of Broadway productions as part of a 9-show Broadway surge.
