Phoenix Unveils New Bookmobile to Bring Library Services Directly to the CommunitySource: City of Phoenix

The streets of Phoenix are set to become more literary as the Phoenix Public Library rolls out its new Bookmobile, aiming to bring books and library services directly to the community. The mobile library was unveiled in an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, serving as a beacon of educational outreach. According to a statement obtained by ABC15, the Bookmobile, funded by the City of Phoenix American Rescue Plan Act Community Investment Focus Area, boasts a selection of 2,500 items, Wi-Fi access, and is designed to be welcoming to all ages and accessible for persons with disabilities.

Mayor Kate Gallego expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Our libraries provide crucial support and assistance that improves the quality of life in Phoenix, and our brand-new Bookmobile is another great tool we'll use to meet and serve residents where they are," according to the phoenix.gov. The Bookmobile is not just a vehicle stocked with books—it's a gateway to an array of library services including Storytime programs and S.T.E.M. activities. To ensure residents can enjoy library amenities directly where they live and work, the vehicle comes equipped with an accessible lift for ADA access and a 20-foot retractable awning for comfort during outdoor activities.

During the ribbon cutting, community members were invited to hop onboard the Bookmobile for a tour, participate in special crafts, and partake in fun library activities. The event signified a new chapter for the Phoenix Public Library as it strives to reach more citizens with its resources. City Librarian Rita Hamilton told phoenix.gov, "I am so pleased Phoenix Public Library will have a bookmobile to provide library services and resources to communities throughout Phoenix." She believes the Bookmobile will extend the library's reach to even more Phoenix residents.

The travels of the Bookmobile are not to just be limited to routine stops. It's slated to show up at various city and neighborhood events, schools, senior centers, and more, enriching Phoenix's cultural fabric one stop at a time.
