A young student at Colonial Park Elementary School in Stoneham, Massachusetts, spiked tension on campus when found in possession of a switchblade knife. The incident occurred just before school let out on Friday, prompting a quick response from school officials. According to a report by WHDH, the unnamed student had reportedly shown the knife to other students and was carrying it in their backpack.
Once tipped off, a faculty member swiftly identified and located the student, opting for a backpack search that yielded the clandestine blade. “At this time, it does not appear that the student intended to harm anyone, and no threats were made against the school community,” administrators said in a statement acquired by Boston 25 News. Despite the absence of malicious intent, the Stoneham Public Schools is not dismissing the severity of the incident.
Following protocol, the administration didn't waste time reaching out to the student’s family and notifying the Stoneham Police Department, as disclosed by Superintendent David Ljungberg, Assistant Superintendent Kathy Martin, and Principal Rosa Flynn. They collectively emphasized a strict adherence to the school’s established safety procedures in such circumstances.
The student at the center of what could have been graver circumstances now faces disciplinary action. The school officials forcefully reinforced the stance that weapons, regardless of intent, undermine the sanctity and safety of the educational environment, which the Stoneham Public Schools holds paramount. “The student will face disciplinary action consistent with the Stoneham Public Schools Elementary Handbook,” school officials stated, delineating the repercussions for such breaches of trust and policy.
