Worcester Police apprehended a 21-year-old local after a dangerous game of cat and mouse that escalated when the suspect allegedly brandished a handgun at officers. The incident occurred early Sunday morning and ended with the man facing multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to the official Worcester Police Department release, two officers on patrol observed a Ford Explorer speeding at around 50 mph on Blanche St. The suspect, later identified as James Cabrera of Trowbridge Circuit, temporarily eluded the officers before being spotted again standing outside the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm.
Officials report that in response to the threat, officers drew their weapons and activated their emergency lights, leading Cabrera to flee once again in the Explorer. A police pursuit ensued but was discontinued when the officers lost sight of the vehicle. Cabrera was later located on his home circuit and taken into custody without further incident.
Charges against Cabrera include two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (firearm), Failure to Stop for Police, and Operating to Endanger. The unsettling event underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in urban settings, where split-second decisions may be the difference between public safety and potential tragedy.
