Broward County Man Faces Judge After Arrest for Grand Theft Auto and Assault on OfficerSource: Broward Sheriff's Office

A 20-year-old man's brief stint of freedom ended with his capture and subsequent day in court after a dramatic escape from the law. Gabriel Martinez, after being arrested for bailing from a stolen vehicle in West Broward, faced a judge who set his bond at $28,500, WSVN reports.

The chain of events unfolded Wednesday when Martinez crashed the stolen vehicle along U.S. 27 just north of Griffin Road, leading to an hours-long search involving Florida Highway Patrol and other agencies. WSVN detailed that he is facing a slew of charges including aggravated assault on an officer, fleeing and eluding, grand theft auto, possession of burglary tools with intent to use, and driving with a suspended license.

Authorities had been alerted to Martinez's reckless escapade by the Miccosukee police, after he fled from an officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 75. The escapee led a chase that concluded with him crashing on U.S. 27 in Broward County and subsequently taking off on foot, Local 10 News shared.

Helicopter footage from Sky 10 captured the scene following the crash as the white vehicle lay abandoned in brush near the roadway. The search intensified and, after a "K9 search," Martinez was located and apprehended. Officials confirmed that a passenger found in the vehicle at the time was released at the site of the incident, according to Local 10 News.

Inside the apprehended vehicle, police found burglary tools, adding to the charges laid against Martinez. Following his arrest, he was taken to Cleveland Clinic in Weston for a check-up before being transported to jail where, as of Thursday morning, he remained held at the Broward County Main Jail.
