Broward County Transit is revving up its green game. The South Florida public transportation provider has bagged the distinguished Energy for Everyone Hero Award, a national nod from the Propane Education & Research Council, in recognition of its pursuit of clean energy. Broward County Transit's fleet of near-zero-emission propane paratransit vehicles is at the center of this environmental win, and to seal the deal, they've rolled out Broward County's latest propane Autogas refueling station to the applause of eco-conscious stakeholders.
Coree Cuff Lonergan, Broward County Transit CEO/General Manager, didn't hide her pride. "This award not only recognizes Broward County Transit's achievements but underscores the transformative power of clean energy in public transportation," Lonergan declared at the ceremony, as reported by Broward County's official news release. Since 2014, the switch from conventional diesel to propane buses has not just slashed emissions but also pumped over $14 million back into the transit system’s pockets.
Paul Strobis, Director of Broward County Transit's Paratransit Division, emphasizes both the financial and environmental upsides to propane vehicles. "Paratransit services are essential for ensuring everyone has access to public transportation, but they can also be the most expensive per-rider option," Strobis acknowledged. With the fleet conversion, Broward County Transit claims dual victories in the fight for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, all while lessening their ecological footprint, as per Broward County.
Such a shift to cleaner transit isn't just blowing smoke. Broward County Transit's move to propane has reportedly reduced their carbon mark by over 14,000 metric tons, showing up to a 96% drop in emissions compared to the old diesel hogs. These propane paratransit shuttles are giving Broward County's air quality a considerable breath of fresh air, offering residents both a healthier environment and a reliable ride. And from Sawgrass to Seagrass, Broward County Transit promises to connect lives sustainably every day, even on holidays.
