In an aggressive push against the chronic issues of poverty and unemployment, Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee is spearheading a series of economic initiatives designed to breathe life into Miami-Dade's District 9. The district, known for being one of the most economically challenged areas, is witnessing a potential turnaround under McGhee's leadership.
Recent figures from a Miami Economic Associates, Inc. analysis based on the 2022 American Community Survey are sobering: A median household income of $54,486 in District 9, lands well below the county's average by nearly 20%, and its 5.6% unemployment rate overshadows the county's average of 3.3%, according to a report from Miami-Dade County. McGhee, however, remains undeterred. He asserts, "Our community deserves better," and insists that his initiatives are not just job creators, but future-builders for the residents of District 9.
The measures launched by McGhee include agritourism, designed to leverage the rich agricultural roots of the district, and the South Dade Logistics Center, which is touted to create over 8,000 jobs and amplify the area's economic activity. Moreover, the Homestead Entertainment District repurposes shipping containers to revolutionize entertainment, resulting in more than 250 jobs and a substantial economic impact.
Other projects include 'Jazz in the Heights' an event that brought in over 17,000 participants, and subsequently, revenue for local businesses, the South Dade Small Business Bootcamp, which supports compliance with regulations, and a collaboration with Costco which confirmed an investment of $217 million and the promise of 300 jobs for the district. The Artz305 program is bringing art and culture into the spotlight, fostering local talent and enriching the community, as per Miami-Dade County.
The Commissioner is also focusing on training and job placement partnerships with local businesses, helping residents acquire the necessary skills for gainful employment. "We are not just creating jobs; we are building futures," McGhee proudly proclaimed in his statement.
