A deadly collision involving two motorcycles and an ATV on the I-95 in Fort Lauderdale led to a shutdown of the northbound lanes early Thursday. The Florida Department of Transportation confirmed that the tragic incident took place near Sunrise Boulevard and led to a full closure of both the northbound and express lanes between Broward Boulevard and Sunrise Boulevard, as reported by CBS Miami.
Authorities reported the crash occurred at around 4 a.m., and, as a result of the accident, a significant gridlock halted early morning traffic. Additional ramps were closed, including the eastbound I-595 ramp to northbound I-95, and ramps from both Broward Boulevard and Davie Boulevard. Travelers heading to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were advised to seek alternative routes, specifically the Turnpike to I-595 then heading east.
The aftermath of the incident was caught on camera by Sky 10, which showed the scene shortly after it unfolded, around 6:30 a.m. Images captured showed one of the motorcycles perched on a tow truck, while a yellow tarp, covering what appeared to be the victim's body, was spread across the roadway. A second motorcycle could also be seen lying several lanes away, according to Local 10 News.
While the exact number of fatalities has not been officially released, at least one death has been confirmed in relation to the early morning highway calamity. The names of the individuals involved and further details surrounding the crash have not been immediately released as investigations are ongoing. The blockage of the roadway for investigative and clean-up purposes added to the already congested traffic conditions, impacting many commuters' travel plans.
