A Dorchester man is behind bars after allegedly landing a haymaker on an unsuspecting 65-year-old and then robbing him while he lay unconscious, Boston prosecutors said yesterday.
52-year-old Damond Brown faces serious charges following the random early-morning attack on April 20 near Harrison and Massachusetts Avenue. Sucker-punched and stripped off his belongings, the victim was discovered with a bloody head wound—a grim scenario described in detail by the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
Brown, who has a lengthy rap sheet that goes back more than three decades, is no stranger to the inside of a courtroom. Convicted of attempted murder in 2019, he'd only just shaken free the shackles of a 4 to 6-year sentence. The details of his past and present allegiances to the law were outlined in a statement from DA Kevin Hayden.
Throwing a punch that sent his victim crashing to the ground, Brown's alleged actions were caught on tape by nearby surveillance cameras, including one at the Boston Medical Center. The video is said to show Brown and an another accomplice going through the man's pockets as he lay motionless—a disturbing image described by authorities.
Unable to slip away into anonymity this time, Brown was recognized and nabbed by officers two days later at a spot a mere stone's throw from the crime scene. Meanwhile, his buddy in the theft remains at large, their identity as yet a puzzle to detectives.
The presence of that ever-watchful electronic eye was hailed by Hayden, who pointed to the invaluable role that security cameras play in tracking down suspects in these jarring acts of 'stranger-violence.' "Technology like surveillance cameras in public areas is enormously beneficial to the community when used responsibly," Hayden claimed, underscoring the balance between ensuring public safety and safeguarding personal freedoms.
Brown is due back in the courtroom on June 17, where he will face the music for his alleged unprovoked assault. Until the gavel falls and the jury speaks, however, he remains an innocent man in the eyes of the law..
