Fort Lauderdale motorists can finally catch a break as the downtown Henry E. Kinney Tunnel on U.S. 1 is set to fully reopen its four lanes this coming Friday. NBC Miami reports that the Florida Department of Transportation confirmed the tunnel's reopening, which has been operating at half capacity since its partial closure.
The move is anticipated to significantly ease the severe traffic jams that have plagued commuters since January when the project to upgrade the aging infrastructure first began. With only two lanes available, residents and visitors alike have had to endure long detours and increased congestion—issues that were to supposed quickly become a thing of the past once the barriers are lifted this week.
Despite the reopening of all lanes, it's important to note that the project is not quite over. The Department of Transportation pointed out that the entire renovation is not expected to be completed until September. This means that while the tunnel will be more accessible, work crews and some equipment might still be a common sight for some months to come.
Representing nearly three years of construction, this long-awaited development is a significant milestone that will provide much-needed relief for regular tunnel users. According to a post on X of Miami Herald, commuters have been eagerly awaiting the day when they can fully use the tunnel, marking an end to one of the city's most tedious traffic snarls.
