Residents of southeast Mesa are gearing up to celebrate a major addition to their community—a new full-service library. Mesa city officials have announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Gateway Library will kick off on Saturday, May 18, at 8:30 a.m., located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway. This significant event marks the beginning of construction on the first new full-service library the city has seen in over 25 years, as reported by the Mesa Arizona Official website.

Mayor John Giles is eagerly backing the project, with hopes to extend the reach of library services in the area. "The Gateway Library is a beautifully designed facility that will bring innovative services and programs to southeast Mesa," Giles said, as per the Mesa AZ. Libraries are known to be community hubs, serving not only as a source for books but also as spaces that connect and inspire those who visit them. The mayor also expressed his appreciation for the Mesa voters' decision to pass the bond issue that funded the library. This new development holds the promise of making a profound impact on the educational and social fabric of the city.

The library, sprawling across approximately 28,000 square feet, will feature an array of facilities including a multi-purpose room, a collaborative workspace and makerspace known as THINKspot, and designated areas for books and resources catered to adults, teens, and children. Designed by the accomplished Richärd Kennedy Architects, the Gateway Library will boast an open concept with high ceilings and bright lighting. Other planned amenities include a digital art display wall, an outdoor reading patio, and a plaza for community events—elements that aim to foster a diverse and engaging experience for patrons.

"We are excited about having an architecturally stunning, innovative library providing a much-needed service to this part of Mesa," Mesa Public Library Director Polly Bonnett told Mesa's official website. The Gateway Library is not only looking to become a convenient resource but is also set to offer a wealth of services that patrons will appreciate. The library's opening is scheduled for the summer of 2025 and is being built by Willmeng Construction, with funds drawn from the 2018 General Obligation Bond and construction sales tax.
