Miami-Dade County residents looking to green their homes and neighborhoods are getting a fresh opportunity to spruce things up as the Adopt-a-Tree program rolls back into town. This Saturday, May 18, the much-anticipated event pitches its tents at the Miami Dade College North Campus, promising homeowners a free shot at adding some leafy giants to their property.
"Trees are not just beautiful additions to our landscape; they are essential to our health and the health of our planet,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was quoted saying in a recent announcement. Aimed at bolstering the local tree canopy and ensuring a "greener, more sustainable tomorrow," the initiative offers up two free trees to single-family and duplex homeowners in the area.
Those itching to dig in will find a variety of native tree species to choose from, and while eager beavers can pre-register to save some time, getting there early is key — it's first-come, first-served and once the day's stock is depleted, latecomers may leave empty-handed. Besides the giveaway, the program provides information shared by DERM staff on how to properly care for these arboreal additions, as per Lourdes Gomez, Director of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, in a statement echoing the event's mutual boon for both homeowners and environmental health.
But trees aren't the only stars of the show. Residents can trade in old showerheads and light bulbs for new, more efficient models, thanks to the Water and Sewer Department's eco-friendly exchange offer also on-site. Carbon footprints may shrink much as the faces of the community's homeowners will likely brighten, as planting trees not only slashes air-conditioning bills and buffers properties against floods but also cements a legacy of sustainability for generations to inherit.
Since the Adopt-a-Tree program's genesis in 2001, over 229,000 trees have taken root in Miami-Dade County, a testament to its enduring success and commitment to a verdant community. For those looking to roll up their sleeves, additional details and volunteer opportunities are available at the Adopt-a-Tree website or by dialing 3-1-1. Mark your calendars for the upcoming giveaway on July 20 at Harris Field Park and then September 29 at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus for those who can't make it this weekend.
