Miami's sea turtles are getting a spotlight this weekend as Miami-Dade County Parks kicks off nesting season with their 2nd annual Turtlepalooza at Crandon Park. Visitors can join in on May 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crandon Park Visitor’s & Biscayne Nature Center for an event packed with activities geared towards conservation, including a chance to aid in a marine debris cleanup along the park’s shoreline.

The county-wide celebration is not just about having fun – it's a chance to truly make a difference in the lives of the endangered species that call the Florida coast home. In an effort to both educate and engage the public, Miami-Dade County Parks has put together a conservation village featuring local environmental organizations, and has lined up sea turtle biologists and other experts to quickly yet efficiently share their knowledge through a speaker series.

With an average of 600 nests monitored each season, Miami-Dade Parks is a leader in sea turtle conservation, as recognized by initiatives such as the 1980 Miami-Dade County Parks Sea Turtle Conservation Program. This effort, launched in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, responds to sea turtle strandings and injuries throughout the year, crucial work considering the urban sprawl's impact on turtle navigation previously misdirected by city lights.

Aligning with global conservation goals, Miami-Dade Parks has extended its commitment to include the operation of Zoo Miami's sea turtle hospital – a first for the county. Injured and sick turtles receive care at this facility, ultimately aiming to safely release them back into wild. "Miami-Dade Parks’ Sea Turtle Conservation work aligns with that of conservationists around the world to protect sea turtles, whose numbers are a globally recognized indicator of the health of our oceans," stated the Miami-Dade County Parks in a press release.

The community is encouraged to actively partake in the conservation efforts during sea turtle season through programs that allow them to adopt a nest, experience a sea turtle night release, or observe a nest excavation. Thorough information on how to get involved can be found on the Miami-Dade County Parks website. With Turtlepalooza, Miami-Dade County Parks isn't just celebrating turtles, but instilling a sense of environmental stewardship in residents and tourists alike.
