A high-speed chase ended in tragedy last Friday night in Pompano Beach when a car, reportedly fleeing police, crashed at the Copans Road exit near Interstate 95, killing one driver, authorities say. The fatal collision occurred just after 11 p.m., as reported by NBC Miami. The Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed the death of Patricia Schmelz, who was hit by the suspect vehicle as she was driving. She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The ill-fated driver, Jamari Peacock, was allegedly involved in an armed carjacking and was being pursued by the Hallandale Beach Police Department. The chase reportedly came to a dramatic end when Peacock tried to quickly exit at Copans Road on a red light, leading to the violent crash. Peacock and five passengers were taken into custody, as stated by authorities. Investigators have identified excessive speed along with fleeing and eluding law enforcement as contributing factors to the deadly incident.
Alongside the fatality, according to BocaNewsNow.com, the crash also left several people critically injured. Footage from the scene showed the substantial impact, with both vehicles sustaining heavy damage. At least three people were rushed to area hospitals by Broward County Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue, while one individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
