Firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens continued their vigilant patrols Tuesday, amid concerns that a brush fire that blazed near Interstate 95 and Donald Ross Road might flare up again. According to CBS12, Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service worked in tandem to prevent any rekindling of Monday's fire, which initially started around 4:40 p.m.
The fire, which engulfed a swathe of forest off Donald Ross Road and Pasteur Blvd,, rapidly spread due to strong winds, prompting firefighters to battle the blaze on two fronts. "We just need to make sure that we don't allow the hotspots and flare-ups, to spread any further," said Cory Besset, Assistant Chief of Operations and Public Information Officer for Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue, in a statement obtained by CBS12. The crews have been creating fire breaks to segregate the burned from the unburned areas, in an attempt to contain the fire's potential spread.
Describing the grueling conditions under which the fire was initially brought under control, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue told WPTV that large plumes of smoke were visible near the interstate soon after the fire was reported. Their update on Monday evening confirmed the fire's containment, after hours of battling what were termed "excruciating conditions."
Even though the fire has been contained, officials like Besset remain on high alert due to the high heat index, which reported to be about 107 degrees feels like, and the increasing winds that could easily reignite the fire. "So this is really time that if anything were to happen, it would," Besset told CBS12. No injuries have been reported, while firefighters stand ready to respond to any resurgence of the blaze as the department remains hopeful for rain to aid their efforts in stabilizing the scene.
Local residents and businesses experienced disruptions due to the fire with an officer from Palm Beach Gardens telling WPTV's Ethan Stein that the fire spread close to the Carrier headquarters building. Despite the challenges ahead, fire crew presence and proactive measures aim to ensure safety and prevent further spread, with the community on edge as they navigate through the aftermath of the potentially destructive force of nature.
