San Antonio was rocked by a deadly confrontation during the city's Fiesta celebrations, leaving the community reeling from the violence captured on body camera footage released by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 28 at Market Square, has been the subject of intense scrutiny as SAPD released harrowing footage from the scene, according to a report by KENS 5.
In what turned into a chaotic shootout, 20-year-old suspect Albert Cisneros Jr. was seen on camera firing toward 18-year-old Mikey Valdez, amidst a crowd of Fiesta-goers. Following an initial exchange of gunshots, a chase ensued with Valdez and Cisneros running through the 100 block of Concho Alley, a report by KSAT details. The pursuit ended tragically, with Valdez pronounced dead at the spot after being shot by SAPD officers, and Cisneros succumbing to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
The body camera footage, not from the officers who fired but capturing the mayhem, shows the terror that gripped the attendees. Individuals were ducking and running in a desperate bid to escape the bullets, screams echoing off the walls of the historic district. Amidst the fray, SAPD said two bystanders were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and two others treated at the scene. SAPD Sgt. Joseph Fech and Officer Zachary Krok, the police involved in the deadly shooting, are currently under the lens of an ongoing investigation by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.
The saga has wrought questions about who precisely is responsible for the injuries sustained by the five bystanders caught in the crossfire. The SAPD, through an official spokesperson, has acknowledged that it remains uncertain whether the injuries were a result of action taken by the suspects or the responding officers, Fech and Krok have served in the force for 13 and five years respectively. Though the body camera footage provides a visceral depiction of the event, it stops short of yielding clear answers on the origin of the bystanders' injuries, further complicating the narrative and the subsequent concluding of the investigation.
In the aftermath, the community grapples with the grievous impact of gun violence that marred a celebration known for its vibrant display of cultural heritage. SAPD's release of the footage comes as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of such events and the swift escalation of conflict into tragedy. As the district attorney's office continues its investigation, many await with bated breath, hoping for answers and justice in the wake of this devastating incident.
