San Diego County Sees Tenth Decline in Gas Prices over 11-Day PeriodPhoto by Erik Mclean on Unsplash

San Diego motorists are catching a break at the pumps, and gas prices are on a noticeable downtrend. According to City News Service, the average price of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County slipped a modest one-tenth of a cent to $5.315 on Monday. This decline marked the 10th drop in 11 days, bringing some relief, albeit in small increments.

The price cut means locals are now paying 3.9 cents less than they did a week ago, and despite being slightly above the mark from a month prior by 2.4 cents, it's a considerable slump from the record-breaking high of $6.435 seen on October 5, 2022. On the national front, the average price perked down two-tenths of a cent to $3.651, which, although slightly higher than times past, shows a similar easing trend.

Andrew Gross, an AAA national public relations manager, shared insights into the current fuel price situation, noting, "From a demand perspective, we have entered the pre-Memorial Day funk," as the City News Service reported. Gross also indicated that "the cost of a barrel of oil is nearly $10 less than two weeks ago, as oil prices have fallen into the upper $70s," hinting that stable pump prices might be on the horizon soon.

The welcome descent in fuel costs was further confirmed by a report from CBS8, which indicated that Wednesday saw a four-tenths of a cent drop to $5.347 per gallon. This continues a trend of gradual reductions despite a slight uptick in the national average to $3.663, which has defied the local diminishing prices.

More detailed statistics from AAA illustrate the day-to-day shifts, showing San Diego's current average at $5.309 compared to $5.315 the day before. While average prices hovered at the lower spectrum of $4 range for regular gas a year ago, current diesel prices show an inverse trend, sitting at $5.221, a slight decrease from last week's $5.281 average and a significant drop from last month's $5.337.
