An 18-year-old man was left fighting for his life after a shooting on the steps of the WeGo Central bus station in downtown Nashville. The incident, which occurred at around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, quickly escalated into violence after an argument between two men. Metro Nashville Police detained Kenneth Johnson, a 31-year-old convicted felon, in connection with the shooting that unfolded at the busy transit hub located at 400 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Following the altercation, Johnson allegedly opened fire multiple times at the victim before attempting to quickly flee the scene. An off-duty MNPD officer, who was working extra duty for WeGo Transit, spotted Johnson running away. The officer managed "to immediately give chase," as Johnson threw down his gun and continued to sprint toward downtown. Eventually conceding to the pressing pursuit, Johnson stopped, laid down, and surrendered to the authorities, a narrative supplied by WSMV.
Both the suspect and the victim were reportedly armed, with the teen managing to discharge his own weapon during the confrontation. Despite his critical injuries, he was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he remains in critical-stable condition. During the aftermath, detectives recovered substances believed "to be cocaine and marijuana were recovered from the scene," according to NewsChannel 5.
Kenneth Johnson, who has previously been convicted of aggravated assault in 2011 and carjacking in 2012, claimed he acted in self-defense. In his interview, Johnson said "he shot the teen in self-defense," details revealed by court documents obtained by WKRN. Now, Johnson is likely facing additional charges in relation to the shooting, including being a felon in possession of a handgun.
The WeGo Central bus station area, usually bustling with commuters, became momentarily a crime scene as law enforcement cordoned off the area to carry out their investigation.
