An overnight blaze in Worcester, Massachusetts, left two people dead and two firefighters hospitalized. The Worcester Fire Department responded to a call on Hancock Street at around 11:30 p.m. last night after reports emerged of individuals trapped by the fire, according to NBC Boston. Upon arrival, firefighters faced a rapidly deteriorating situation with heavy flames consuming the first floor of a multi-family home.
Despite the chaos and overwhelming conditions, rescue teams located and extracted two adult residents from the first floor, who were immediately transported to a local hospital. Tragically, both were pronounced dead, their identities withheld as of reporting, according to officials quoted by NBC Boston. Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche reflected on the grievous impact on the community, saying, "This is tragic for the city of Worcester."
The fire also took a toll on the brave respondents, with two firefighters hospitalized suffering from exhaustion. They were part of the efforts described by Roche as hard and valiant, in the face of what he labeled "advanced" fire conditions, as recounted by WHDH. The old structure, characterized by "balloon frame construction" noted by Roche, possibly contributed to the fire's swift spread.
Displaced by the incident were four adults and three children, now without a home. Neighbor Bassam Kahn, witnessing the inferno, felt the helplessness shared by many, lamenting to WHDH, "There was so much bad at that time, we couldn't do anything because the fire [was] too much." As details emerge, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with fire officials not aware of any safety violations related to the property, affirming the investigation is ongoing, according to Boston 25 News.
