Two Miami-area smoke shops have become the latest prey to burglars seeking a quick score. In the span of a single day, thieves broke into businesses in North Miami Beach and Miami, leaving behind shattered glass and unanswered questions.
Early Tuesday morning, a masked man shattered the tranquility of the North Miami Beach night by forcefully throwing a rock through the front door of a local smoke shop on Northeast 167th Street. The burglar's intentions were clear—to quickly snatch as much as he could carry. According to NBC6, the thief did not just steal money but managed to also abscond with various merchandise. A temporary caretaker of the store detailed that "the man broke the register, took an envelope that had money on it and merchandise from the store in two minutes."
The business, usually a place of commerce and leisurely indulgence, has now become a crime scene, with the culprit having fled in an uncertain direction as reported by the local authorities. The incident has left a tangible sense of violation and yet another chore for law enforcement officers already stretched thin by a tapestry of crime in the city.
Not 24 hours prior, the Miami Vice Smoke Shop #3 on NW Second Avenue also endured a similar criminal intrusion. As reported by Local 10, the owner discovered the smashed entrance of his establishment on Monday at around 4:07 a.m. In a fortuitous turn of events, the would-be thieves were unable to locate money or goods to steal. "Nothing was taken, so he believes the crooks were after money," the owner relayed to Local 10. Nonetheless, the damage to the storefront stands as a stark reminder of the event.
The City of Miami Police Department is on the lookout for those responsible behind these burglaries, and they're asking anyone with information to come forward. Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers can be reached at 305-471-8477, where tips can be shared anonymously. As these shattering events unfold, both communities are left to grapple with the pieces of their disrupted security, hoping for a resolution that will restore more than broken glass.
