A 20-year-old man wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant led law enforcement on a chase through Downtown yesterday before being nabbed and found with a stash of illegal firearms. Members of the Warrant Unit, comprising the Lowell Police, Middlesex Sheriff's Office, and the Massachusetts State Police, made the arrest following a foot pursuit, authorities said.
The suspect bolted when officers tried to approach him in connection to the warrant. The chase drew in multiple Lowell Police Department officers, and National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers – who swooped in to assist. According to a Facebook post by the Lowell Police Department, after a brief pursuit, the suspect was apprehended, and a variety of illegal weapons were seized, including a handgun, a shotgun, and a high-capacity rifle.
Charges laid against the young man are serious. He faces multiple counts of carrying a firearm without a license, among other firearms-related charges. As the Lowell community reels from the gravity of this incident, details of the man's identity, and his criminal history have not yet been disclosed. The seizure of such firepower on city streets has brought a new urgency to discussions of public safety and the perils posed by illegal weapons.
The operation, which played out in broad daylight, raises questions about the brazenness of individuals in possession of such weapons. Details of how the suspect came into possession of the arsenal remain unclear, but local authorities are being lauded for their quick response in preventing potential tragedy. The Lowell Police Department acknowledged the collaboration, "with assistance of multiple LPD officers and NPS Law Enforcement Rangers, he was apprehended and placed into custody." The suspect is currently awaiting arraignment as the investigation continues.
