Delray Beach is reeling after a tragic series of road incidents claimed two lives in separate crashes. Thomas Lewis, a 21-year-old West Palm Beach man, faces charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter after being involved in a fatal collision in February. According to BocaNewsNow.com, Lewis, driving his Mercedes C250, is accused of crashing into German Barreto's Toyota RAV 4 at the junction of Military Trail and Las Verdes Drive, resulting in Barreto's death at the scene.
In separate sorrow, a motorcycle rider died on Monday morning after an accident involving a sedan on West Atlantic Avenue, just west of Military Trail. The victim, a 25-year-old motorcyclist, was pronounced dead on the scene after reportedly striking the Toyota sedan at "a high rate of speed". Delray Beach Fire Rescue transported the sedan's driver to the hospital with minor injuries. The aftermath saw the western lanes of West Atlantic Avenue closed for approximately three hours as Delray Beach police investigated the crash, as reported by The Palm Beach Post.
The February accident, which took months to yield an arrest, was described in detail by investigators. "Lewis was operating his Mercedes northbound on Military Trail from Linton Blvd., closing on the Toyota from the rear," police said. "For unknown reasons, Lewis failed to fully steer away from the Toyota, causing the front right of the Mercedes to impact the left rear of the Toyota." The resulting violent collision sent the Toyota hurtling off the road, where it ultimately collided with a telephone pole, as reported by BocaNewsNow.com.
Meanwhile, Delray Beach police have yet to release the name of the deceased motorcyclist from Monday's incident, maintaining an investigation into a crash that cut another life short on the city's treacherous roads. As local residents grasp for understanding, authorities urge drivers and riders alike to exercise caution on the stretch of asphalt that has become a scene for loss and lament.
