A gruesome discovery marred the Memorial Day holiday in North Miami Beach after a woman's body was found floating in a canal, authorities said. Patrolling officers from the North Miami Beach Police were alerted by bystanders to the body in the waters of Snake Creek Park, as reported by NBC6.
The police presence quickly escalated in the area of 601 NE 165th St, where, the officers utilized a flotation device to recover the woman's body and bring it to shore. Investigators have yet to determine how long the body had been in the water before being discovered. In a statement obtained by NBC6, police indicated they are conducting a death investigation, however, currently, there are no signs of foul play.
Details about the woman's identity and the circumstances leading up to her death remain scarce. Local residents and park-goers found their day disrupted by the macabre scene as a dive team members from the local police department worked the site, Local 10 News reported. The area was cordoned off while officials conducted the retrieval and initial investigation.
The North Miami Beach Police have not released additional information, pending notification of next of kin and further investigation. They ask that anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and help piece together the last moments of the woman found, in the center of a community's solemn holiday observance.
