A seemingly ordinary night in Englewood turned tragic when a 19-year-old woman was fatally shot while driving, leading to a collision that injured three others. The Chicago Police Department reports that the incident occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday, when an unidentified assailant in a silver SUV opened fire on the victim's Chevrolet Malibu in the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard.
The young woman, later identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Cyra C. Magby from the 7600 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, suffered a gunshot wound to the upper back. She lost control of her vehicle, which subsequently struck a Volkswagen Jetta on the 5400 block of South Halsted Street, according to the Chicago Tribune. A passenger in the Malibu, who is another 19-year-old woman, acquired lacerations to the face and was taken in serious condition to UChicago Medicine where her condition was stabilized.
Following the impact, the driver and passenger of the Jetta, a 43-year-old man, and a 40-year-old woman, were also injured and later transported in good condition to Stroger Hospital with minor injuries. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, responding officers initially called to the scene for the traffic crash found Magby unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center at 11:38 p.m.
The assailant's silver SUV fled the scene heading north, and as of now, remains at large. Area 1 detectives are investigating the case, but no arrests have yet been made. The Chicago Police Department has not released any further details regarding the incident or potential motives behind the shooting. The investigation by Area 1 detectives continues as the community grapples with the sudden and violent loss of young Cyra C. Magby.
