The Boynton Beach community is mourning the loss of an 8-year-old boy, whose body was found in the ocean after a tragic incident Thursday morning. CBS12 reports that multiple agencies, including Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, Boynton Beach Fire Rescue, the United States Coast Guard, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, were involved in the search and recovery mission after the boy fell into the water while fishing with his father on the seawall at Boynton Beach Inlet.
The call for help was received at around 6:09 a.m., and by 10:39 a.m., the rescue team made the heartbreaking discovery of the boy's body in the ocean near the north side of the inlet, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body's recovery while noting strong currents and waves make Boynton Beach Inlet particularly dangerous, and extra safety measures around water are imperative, as per NBC Miami.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesperson Tom Reyes described the inlet as a challenging search area due to the volume of water passing through the narrow space, creating strong currents and waves, further stating the importance of taking precautions such as wearing a life jacket. "Don’t come out here alone. Wear your life jacket. Where a PFD. If you’re next to the while nobody plans on something like this happening and that’s why that PFD, that life jacket is a great insurance policy to have in case something tragic like this occurs," Reyes emphasized in a statement obtained by CBS12.
The boy's father, in an emotional recount to NBC Miami, said, "My son was so important to me. His passion was fishing. We would be at home and he would beg for me to take him fishing. It’s something we did every day." While the specifics of the boy's fall are still under investigation, the search and recovery efforts involved divers, boats, and a helicopter, an unfortunate reminder of nature's unforgiving power and the need for vigilance near hazardous water zones as told by Hoodline.
