A community service aide with the Broward Sheriff's Office finds herself on the opposite side of the law after being arrested for grand theft and fraud, accused of stealing a staggering $65,000 worth of lottery tickets from a 7-Eleven where she was also employed. WSVN reports Chantalle Civil, 44, was taken into custody by BSO deputies in Pompano Beach this Monday.
The discrepancy in the store's lottery ticket sales was first noted between late April and late May at the convenience store located at 2391 North Dixie Highway, following this an investigation led to Civil's arrest, she having worked for BSO since August 2002 but is now on leave without pay from her duties at the Oakland Park District. In a twist of events that raises questions about trust and integrity within community institutions, authorities claim Civil printed the lottery tickets during her scheduled shifts and on her off days, actions that were meant to be in the service of the community but were instead a disservice wrapped in a betrayal of trust.
According to CBS12, it was an internal store audit that unraveled the scheme, and BSO detectives have since confirmed that Civil was both an employee at the 7-Eleven and served the sheriff's office, the latter being a position she has held for more than two decades.
The BSO has not provided details on Civil's motives or how exactly she was able to execute the alleged theft, but they promise the investigation is active and ongoing, with more details to emerge as the process unfolds.
