Acting on intel provided by a License Plate Reader, Officer Brodie could pinpoint and detain the automobile. The incident, which unfolded recently, resulted in not only the retrieval of the stolen vehicle but also in a significant drug bust.
During the high-risk traffic stop, the driver, a woman whose name has yet to be disclosed, complied with orders to exit the vehicle. With assistance from Officers Guerrero and Lopez, the subsequent search revealed more than a rogue means of transportation. According to the department's announcement on social media, the officers discovered "a scale, numerous baggies, drug paraphernalia and drugs." Ensnared in the fabric of her clothing, a considerable 37.7 grams of fentanyl were hidden, turning the tide of the incident into something much more than a simple case of a stolen car.
The magnitude of the find in the clothing was underscored by the City of Carlsbad Police Department as they proceeded to level multiple charges against the driver. She now faces legal repercussions for not only the possession of stolen goods but also for the possession of a controlled substance, which takes a starker tone when viewed against the mounting opioid crisis. Further compounding her alleged crimes is the intent to distribute narcotics, a charge inferred by the presence of the scale and baggies found with the illicit stash.
