The Chicago Police Department is ramping up its efforts to curb impaired driving with a DUI Saturation Patrol slated for the 9th (Deering) District this weekend, starting from Friday, June 28, 2024, at 6 p.m. until early Saturday morning. This enforcement push, according to an official statement by the Chicago Police Department, is not just to solely catch DUI cases but also to actively enforce laws related to speed, alcohol-related offenses, and safety belt violations, among others.
During these saturations, roving patrols are added to heavily scrutinize vehicular traffic, ensuring they catch to swiftly identify any signs of impaired driving. Police units equipped with speed detection gear are going to be on the lookout for speedsters, among other traffic violators. The department's efforts extend to the utilization of the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit, which significantly cuts down the time needed to charge individuals with DUI offenses by allowing on-site processing and issuing of Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds).
Reflecting on the previous weekend's DUI Saturation Patrol in the 8th (Chicago Lawn) District, the results were telling. Not a single DUI arrest was made, yet officers handed out a total of 42 citations, as per the same police report. The infractions ranged from seat belt and insurance violations to unsafe vehicle violations, with even one reported instance of distracted driving.
