The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for residents and visitors of the 002nd District (Wentworth) following a string of robberies, as reported on their official website. According to the alert, several individuals were robbed after agreeing to meet potential buyers from a social media site for sales transactions. These incidents have taken place in the 5100 block of south Dorchester Ave., spanning from late May to mid-June.
Details of these crimes show a disturbing pattern where victims are targeted after they place online ads to sell items. The times and locations of the robberies include May 29 at 4:40 P.M., June 5 at 8:50 P.M., June 11 at 5:30 P.M., and June 17 at 6:15 P.M. Upon arrival to meet the supposed buyers, the victims have been forcefully deprived of their property with the offenders quickly fleeing the scene into nearby buildings. Police have described the offenders as African-American males, aged between 20-25 years old, and are seeking information from the community to assist in their investigations.
CPD is urging the public to take precautions when conducting such transactions and has provided safety tips, advising individuals to be observant, report any suspicious activities, remain calm if confronted, and pay attention to distinct physical features of potential assailants.
