In a unanimous decision, the Coral Springs City Commission has cleared the way for a major boost to local law enforcement technology. A substantial $5.5 million contract has been secured with Axon Enterprise that promises to outfit the Coral Springs Police Department with a bevy of new tech tools. According to a report by TAPinto Coral Springs, this modernization effort will span over five years and includes updated body cameras, Tasers, and drones.
The procurement will see the addition of 270 body-worn cameras, 243 Tasers, and six drones—all aimed to enhance the department's operational capabilities. The decision to waive the competitive procurement process, as cited in a city memo, marks a continued partnership with Axon, which has been supplying the city with equipment since 2019. Deputy Chief Ryan Gallagher is to notably have emphasized the need to ever increasingly take advantage of current technology in order to better serve the public.
"Having the body cams to record everything that occurs leaves no question if there’s ever a concern," Gallagher told TAPinto Coral Springs in an interview. He further elaborated on their significance, saying, "Plus, adding Tasers helps reduce injuries to both us and the public."
The integration of these new devices is expected quite seamlessly to link with an evidence system, thus streamlining the process of gathering and managing digital evidence.
