A sizable chimney that has long punctuated the skyline at the Deerfield Beach Waste Management landfill is scheduled to be no more come Friday. Waste Management, Inc. in collaboration with Controlled Demolition, Inc. are set to carry out a controlled implosion of the Wheelabrator Refuse Plant Boiler House and its adjoining 199-foot smokestack, as outlined by Local 10 News. Residents in the vicinity have been cautioned about potential dusty conditions following the demolition.
According to officials, the implosion is rigorously planned to happen at 10 a.m. Broward Sheriff’s deputies will cordially establish an exclusion zone, with accompanying detours along Wiles Road stretching from Lyons Road to Powerline Road, designed to ensure public safety. "Deputies are warning the public about heavy dust in the block immediately surrounding the demolition site," a statement obtained by Local 10 News detailed. The said detours will effectively snap into place half an hour before the implosion and are expected to persist for a duration of 30 minutes post-implosion.
Concerns center not only on the immediate vicinity but also on the areas downwind where the dust could drift, weather conditions playing a decisive role in its dispersal. Officials are recommending that members of the community remain indoors during the demolition to prevent exposure to the dust. This move seeks to minimize potential health risks associated with the inhalation of particulate matter.
In a bid to further disseminate this information and to ensure smooth local commutes, the Deerfield Beach BSO post on X a reminder for motorists. "Wiles Road will be closed to through traffic from Powerline Rd to the Turnpike overpass." The BSO encourages drivers to use alternative routes and to exercise caution while driving in the vicinity of the demolition site. Employing strategic road closures, authorities are working diligently to manage both the dust fallout and the disruption to everyday life that the demolition is sure to temporarily bring.
