A fatal collision occurred on I-80/94 in Lake County, Indiana, claiming the life of a driver early Wednesday morning, according to WISH-TV. Indiana State Police were called to the scene near the Calumet Avenue exit, around a mile east of the Illinois/Indiana state line, shortly after 1 a.m. The incident involved a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a white Volvo semi-tractor and trailer.
The sequence of events, as established by investigators, indicates that the Jeep was travelling westbound when it collided with an attenuator in the gore area next to the exit ramp. Subsequently, the Jeep came to a stop, facing the wrong way in the westbound lanes, where it was then struck head-on by the semi-truck, WGN-TV reports. The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene, with their identity withheld pending family notification.
The aftermath of the crash caused significant traffic delays as authorities conducted their investigation. The driver of the semi, which was later identified as a white Volvo, was unharmed in the collision. Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction teams were summoned to assist in dissecting the dynamics of the crash, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
