Bayview Drive in Coral Ridge is undergoing an extensive infrastructure renovation, the city of Fort Lauderdale reports. Residents have seen an increased presence of crews and heavy machinery since May 16, as the city and contractors from David Mancini & Sons, Inc. (DMSI) respond to a substantial gravity sewer main issue between NE 12th Street and NE 12th Court. According to information from the City of Fort Lauderdale’s update, the repair was initially expected to take roughly two weeks, yet the complexity of the operation has pushed the estimated completion to late June 2024.
The current repair phase has involved stabilizing surrounding ground and mobilizing equipment, as updated by the city on Wednesday, June 5 at 1:45 p.m. The project has the crews replacing nearly 200 feet of the main, leading to road closures: southbound Bayview Drive has been closed, redirecting traffic through NE 12th Court, Middle River Drive, to NE 12th Street. As crews work closer to grasping the ground water during the optimum window provided at low tide, some work will span overnight hours.
The extended hours, taking place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday, with potential overnight work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., are necessary to give the crews more precise control of the situation, with tidal influences taken into consideration. As can be expected with any work of this nature, residents are anticipating intermittent noise from machinery, but measures are being taken to reduce the disruption as per the recent flyer redirect linked on the city’s website. As outlined by Herbert E. Stanley, City of Fort Lauderdale Project Manager II, via the most recent update, "Some overnight work will be required to allow crews better control of the ground water based on the timing of low tide."
For those living in proximity to Bayview Drive, the construction has not been without its inconveniences. Lights meant to facilitate overnight work brightly illuminate the night, and despite pledges to minimize hassle, the rumble of heavy machinery disrupts the quiet evenings. Complaints have been met with assurances from DMSI that community comfort is a priority, emphasizing their commitment to mitigation practices to lessen the impact of both noise and light pollution.
