Broward County has found its new Port Director in the person of Joseph Morris, whose current role as Port Director for the Massachusetts Port Authority is drawing to a close after a four-year tenure, during Morris's tenure he first served in the capacity of Deputy Port Director of Operations, as reported by the Broward County's recent press release. The County Commission reinforced the County Administrator’s decision on June 18, paving the way for Morris to assume office at Port Everglades on July 15, the same year.
An exhaustive national hunt for the right candidate, flavored with input from a spectrum of port stakeholders, culminated in Morris's selection; his impressive track record encapsulates both private sector agility and public service solidity over a sprawling 25-year career, Broward County Administrator Monica Cepero highlighted Morris’s "exceptional leadership" and international aptitude, commenting, "Joe is a visionary who brings vast international experience and understands the vital economic role that a seaport plays in a community." Port Everglades, standing as a critical economic entity in Florida, presents Morris with an intricate challenge: to helm a seaport responsible for pumping in excess of $26.5 billion into the state’s economic stream, buttressing roughly 11,000 jobs locally, and contributing over $925 million in taxes at both state and local levels, as reported by Broward County's official website.
Lofty expectations trail behind Morris, and the enthusiasm is mutual, as he envisions not merely maintaining but advancing the Port’s influential stature from its strategic vantage point in the locale, contributing regionally, even globally, he commits to fostering "an inclusive economic environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed." At Massport, Morris’s legacy, according to Broward County's press release, includes managing a wide portfolio from cargo and cruise operations to the development of public spaces and international business negotiations — experiences that likely put a gleam in the eyes of his future employers at Port Everglades.
Holding a bachelor's degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and armed with certifications and leadership training credentials such as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, Morris seems primed to chart a course for Port Everglades that seeks to harmonize commercial vigor with community advantage his new role demands an astute balancing of the port's multifaceted interests, spanning from local employment to global partnerships.
