Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago made a strategic move to expand its Streeterville medical campus by acquiring the building at 211 East Chicago Avenue, previously the headquarters of the American Dental Association (ADA). This purchase was confirmed on Wednesday, marking an augmentation of the hospital's operational space to further its healthcare services. The ADA, reducing its Chicago office footprint in response to changing work patterns, sold the property to Lurie Children’s, which has been the building’s primary tenant in recent years.
The ADA's shift from the property comes as it braces for a consolidation of its staff and functions. With employees increasingly working remotely, usually two or three days a week, the former requirement for office space has significantly diminished, as detailed in a report by the Chicago Tribune. Consequently, the ADA will relocate its office headquarters to the upper tiers of 401 N. Michigan Avenue. Moreover, the association is in the process of condensing its research labs under one roof within the Boston metropolitan area.
While the exact figures involved in the transaction were not disclosed, ADA Executive Director Dr. Raymond Cohlmia emphasized that financial gain was not the primary motive behind the decision, as conveyed in a statement obtained by the Chicago Tribune. The aim was to reconfigure ADA’s space needs in sync with today's working environment and simultaneously facilitate Lurie Children’s Hospital's expansion.
On the other side of the transition, Lurie Children’s hospital views the purchase as a major step toward enhancing patient services. Senior Vice President Kary McIlwain stated that acquiring the adjacent building allows for the expansion of clinical operations by reallocating administrative functions out of the main hospital. "This is an exciting milestone that coincides with the June anniversary of the hospital’s move 12 years ago to the state-of-the art facility we built in Streeterville" McIlwain told the American Dental Association. The strategic move is meant to align with the organization’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare to children in need.
