In an effort to support pet owners in underserved communities, Miami-Dade Animal Services has partnered with the Friends of Miami Animals Foundation to bring veterinary care on wheels. The Wellness on Wheels (WOW) program, a mobile veterinary clinic, provides routine medical care to dogs and cats belonging to residents in areas with limited access to pet health services. This initiative aims to address the needs of at-risk pets and their owners throughout Miami-Dade County.
Offering a range of services from wellness vaccines and boosters to deworming and flea prevention, the WOW clinic is designed to bridge the veterinary care gap in these communities. Although the mobile unit does not offer spay/neuter surgeries, veterinary staff are available to refer clients to low-cost or no-cost options for these services. The program strives to quickly adapt to serve as many pets as possible, allowing pets to be served on a first-come, first-served basis until the daily capacity is reached.
Currently, the wellness clinic has set up shop at the JFK Public Library, located at 190 W 49th Street in Hialeah, FL. The doors are open from Monday through Wednesday, with operating hours from 8:30 a.m. to noon and then from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This schedule will remain in place through August 28 as reported by Miami-Dade County's announcement.
No appointments are necessary to receive assistance from the WOW clinic, but they do not currently accept litters. The initiative is supported by a substantial donation and grants from the Friends of Miami Animals Foundation Inc.
