A devastating event unfolded at a Miami-Dade shopping plaza Friday morning, where three individuals, including a minor, were fatally shot in what officials are deeming an apparent murder-suicide. The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to the scene in the vicinity of a busy Chase bank along Bird Road and Southwest 152nd Avenue, as reported by Local 10 News. A man allegedly exited his car in the bank's drive-thru and fired multiple shots into a neighboring vehicle, killing a husband, mother, and their toddler, before turning the gun on himself.
Patrons at nearby businesses, such as a Pilates studio in the Kendall West shopping plaza, were sent into a state of alarm when the shots rang out around 7:30 a.m. An attendee of the class reported to Local 10 News that, "about 15 shots" were heard, prompting the instructor to secure the room and shelter the class. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the deceased, or determine whether there was any known connection between the shooter and his victims, as the investigation continues.
Miami-Dade County police confirmed that the child was seated in a car seat at the time of the incident, adding another layer of tragedy to the already heartbreaking event. Details remain scarce as police work to unravel the motive behind the shooting, and whether this was a targeted attack or the result of a dispute gone violently awry.
The area surrounding the bank, including parts of the shopping plaza, has been sectioned off as a crime scene. NBC6 reports that investigators are not only probing the events leading up to the shooting, but also reviewing surveillance footage, in the hopes that it might provide clarity on this brutal act. The local community grapples with the reality of this violence, which seems to mirror past incidents in a country repeatedly scarred by gun-related tragedies. A Local 10 News crew is on site and committed to updating the public as new information becomes available.
