Early this morning, on the Stevenson Expressway, a person was injured after their vehicle was shot at, leading them to crash into a wall, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The shooting incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on Interstate 55 near State Street. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries sustained from the accident, while the Illinois State Police are continuing to thoroughly investigate the event.
The wounded individual's details have not been made public, and the extent of the injuries remains unclear. Meanwhile, the WLS-TV report indicated that the car was hit by gunfire, but the person driving the car did not sustain gunshot wounds. The aftermath of the incident disrupted the flow of traffic for hours, with lanes only reopening at about 7:30 a.m. and authorities having to divert traffic off at the Chinatown feeder ramp and close the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway ramp to the inbound Stevenson.
In a related incident on Cicero Avenue near the Stevenson Expressway, a significant three-car collision resulted in the shutting down of the road for over two hours. A white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was severely damaged in the crash, which saw its roof and doors removed from the vehicle. The debris from this wreck was scattered across the road, as captured by Chopper7, and at least one individual was seen being loaded into an ambulance.
The conditions of those involved in the second crash have yet to be released, and ABC7 has reportedly reached out to Chicago police to get updates. As the situation unfolds, local commuters are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid delays and to allow emergency services to work safely and without hindrance. The current state of the Stevenson Expressway serves as a solemn reminder of the fragility of safety on the roads and the rapid disruption that can be caused by such unforeseen events.
