A major collision in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood on Monday involved a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus and resulted in numerous injuries. The incident, which saw the bus striking several vehicles and reportedly careening into a building, required a significant emergency response at the intersection of West 35th Street and South Halsted Street, near the Ramova Theater. According to NBC Chicago, at least four individuals have been transported to area hospitals and three of those are in red, indicating serious-to-critical conditions.
As the accident unfolded, it was documented from above by NBC’s Sky 5 helicopter, showing the extent of the vehicular damage. Closed in both directions due to the crash, Halsted was between 35th Street and 34th Street, with the Chicago Police and Fire Department blocking off the area for cleanup and investigation. Similarly, 35th Street was closed between Lituanica Avenue and South Emerald, halting traffic and causing distress to the rhythms of the city as reported by Total Traffic.
The CTA has issued a string of alerts addressing the impact on local transit routes. In response to the collision, buses on the 8 and 35 routes have been rerouted to avoid the crash site, as the efforts to clear the scene are underway. Details from WGN-TV indicate that the affected area is adjacent to the historic Ramova Theater, a notable landmark in the community which underscores the prominence of the site in the everyday lives of those navigating these streets.
The current state of the victims remains unclear, with no additional information available on their conditions besides the initial assessments provided by the Chicago Fire Department. As first reported by NBC Chicago, multiple vehicles' wreckage paints a somber picture of disruption and chaos brought to an abrupt and violent pause — a narrative that will continue to develop as further updates are released.
