A massive fire, described by onlookers as chaotic, broke through an apartment building in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving at least two people trapped and subsequently rescued amidst the inferno. According to NBC10 Boston, the blaze occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the building on Outlook Drive. Authorities stated that a third individual was also hospitalized, although the details surrounding their injuries remain undisclosed at this point.
The Worcester Fire Department faced significant challenges as they battled the sprawling fire; at one point, access to adequate water was strained because the incident took place in a large complex located up a hill, an issue which firefighters eventually managed to contain as they worked to extinguish the flames, video footage captured by a neighbor shows both a man and a woman on the third floor, surrounded by a surge of fire before police and firefighters arrived, according to the same NBC report. Of note, witnesses described the tragic scene, with resident Jesilia Molina recounting to NBC10 Boston the screams heard from the adjacent apartment, complete with pleas for help, raising concerns about whether others had managed to escape.
Citing the WCVB coverage, Worcester Fire Department Chief Martin Dyer stated that although the fire spread to three buildings, it appears to have started in the third floor apartment where the couple was rescued; as a result, dozens of residents are now without homes. In an outpouring of community support, the Salvation Army is reportedly aiding 35 people, including families with infants and toddlers, and the Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Worcester Senior Center to accommodate the victims.
While the fire's cause continues to be a matter for investigation, the tragedy's human impact is clear, as recounted by a neighbor in an interview acquired by WHDH: "I heard a lot of screaming, a lot of talking and yelling," and mentioned their own harrowing escape, detailing, "I didn’t have time to put my prosthetic on, I just got in the wheelchair and wondered how I was going to get out, when they finally came and got me." With the community reeling from the immediate aftershock of the blaze, crews from surrounding towns were called to assist the Worcester firefighters, who, despite challenges, were able to bring the conflagration under control.
